SUPERINTENDENT ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
24 Nov
Westwind School Division announces the retirement of Superintendent Dr. Doug Bennett effective August 31, 2010. Dr. Bennett will certainly be missed and we greatly appreciate the legacy he leaves behind.
Dr. Bennett started his education career 34 years ago as a grade 1 – 9 teacher in Vimy School, in the former Westlock School Division. He then taught in Westlock Elementary School before moving to Raymond, Alberta in 1981. Over the past 34 years, Dr. Bennett has served as a principal (9 years), a Deputy Superintendent (3 years) and for the past 4 years, as Superintendent of Schools for the Westwind School Division No. 74. During his career, he has earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the U of A, his Master’s Degree from Gonzaga University and a Doctorate from the University of Montana. He has been an active member of College of Alberta School Superintendents for the past 7 years.
Dr. Bennett has five children and eight grandchildren. Retirement will bring about new opportunities, such as enjoying his grandchildren, traveling, playing golf, being more involved in service, and serving a full time mission for the LDS Church. He has enjoyed his career and found it to be very rewarding and fulfilling. Dr. Bennett has enjoyed his association with his co-workers and those he has met over the years. His greatest joy is seeing children succeed. He has been an effective and successful educator and administrator spanning more than three decades. He has made a difference in the lives of thousands of young people as a teacher, school and system administrator.
Dr. Bennett will leave as a part of his legacy a strong culture of collaboration and commitment to high educational standards. He is driven to seek and expect excellence from himself, and those around him. Combine this with a witty sense of humor and a friendly demeanor; he has truly been a powerful influence and role model in education.
Thank you Dr. Bennett for your devotion to sound practice and operational wisdom.
