Professional Learning Communities

Our Commitment to Continuous Improvement

The Westwind School Division is committed to continuous improvement in our capacity to provide the highest quality learning opportunities for every child in our schools.

Following both research and consultation, the benefits of and the desire to see education undergo an informed transformation includes transforming the way teachers do their work in order to support their capacity to provide the high quality, engaging instruction that students need now to prepare them for their future.

The concept of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) as an organizational model in education is one of these changes and it is leading to truly transformational advancements in progressive schools and school districts across North America…The most current research on educational reform indicates that a PLC is the most promising strategy for sustained, substantive school improvement.

"The most promising strategy for sustained, substantive school improvement is building the capacity of school personnel to function as a professional learning community. The path to change in the classroom lies within and through professional learning communities.

Throughout our ten year study, whenever we found an effective school or an effective department within a school, without exception that school or department has been part of a collaborative professional learning community." (Milbrey and McLaughlin 1995)

In a PLC everything that teachers do together is focused on four guiding questions:

  1. What do we expect students to learn?
  2. How will we know if they have learned it?
  3. What will we do if students haven't learned it?
  4. What enrichment will provide for students who have learned it?
