Dogs may not be able to read, but they sure make great listeners!
This is the concept behind Paws 2 Read, a program at Magrath Elementary School that gives students a “dog-friendly” atmosphere to practice their reading skills. Pets as therapy programs such as this are functioning all over Canada and North America with amazing results. MES's program has been first one of its kind in this area.
Research has shown that children who participate in this type of program make enormous strides in reading and communication skills, while building self-esteem, confidence, and social skills along the way. Research has also shown that by reading to the specially trained dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. Reading skills improve because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.
Thank-you to Susan Roberts and her dog Forte for helping our students overcome their reading anxieties and achieve their full potential!
