Trial Involving Westwind Teacher
Westwind School Division is aware that a not guilty verdict was pronounced this morning in a trial involving one of our staff members.
Personnel matters are delicate and require employers to ensure that we balance the rights of employees with ensuring the protection of students. Now that the criminal process has come to a conclusion we will address our obligations from an employer’s perspective. We as the employer must assess the conduct from the perspective of the school board and will complete our internal review and will make decisions based on the information available to us. We will, with the assistance of legal counsel, review the findings of the court and determine whether the conduct that was found to have occurred is incompatible with continued employment with our school board.
We will also formally advise the Alberta Teachers' Association and the Minister of Education of the outcome of the process. The Alberta Teachers' Association must assess the conduct from a Code Professional Conduct perspective in accordance with the Teaching Profession Act.
The principles that guide our division’s response to such circumstances is ensuring student safety and ensuring that students are our priority. We will not be commenting further on this matter at this time and always will ensure that our decisions comply with our legal obligations.
