A Delicious Tradition: Magrath Elementary Hosts 4th Annual “Ready 2 Spaghetti”

Earlier this week, I received a letter from one of our MES grade two students inviting me to their “Ready 2 Spaghetti Restaurant” along with a dinner ticket. The letter was neatly written, all the letters perfectly formed, and very neat and articulate. I was immediately impressed with this project! I cleared my time and made a point to stop by, given this was their 4th annual restaurant, I knew I was in for a great time.
When I arrived, I was met with grade two hosts, waiters, waitresses, servers, cooks, and platers, all dressed in their professional best and doing their assigned jobs with precision. The students were kind and well-spoken, looking me in the eye as they spoke, taking my order, checking on the food, cleaning up my plates, stopping to visit, and even sharing a joke! This event was a masterpiece and showcased to the multitudes of people in attendance what committed adults entrusted to teach our youngsters look like! What I equally loved was the competence and manner in which our grade two youngsters handled and portrayed their proficiency to their community. They were awesome!
I would like to thank all the Grade 2 students at MES who worked so hard to make this fun event a huge success. The restaurant project was designed as a project-based learning experience, using the restaurant itself to connect Alberta prairie resources to the Grade 2 curriculum in math, writing, and social skills.
Thanks to all those from the community who came out to support our students, teachers, and the MES school for organizing such a large event. Finally, a special thank you to our grade two teachers, Layne Barnett, Tisha Gilbert, and Bonnie Joseph, alongside our EAs Shauna Jones, Macey Zaremba, and Alicia Owens, for their efforts in this event and for ensuring its success. All of this wouldn’t be possible without the support of Principal Julie Gilson, VPs Josh Sherwood and Kara Baldwin, and the other MES staff in attendance, who have contributed their hard work and love for all the school initiatives and student opportunities at MES. A special mention and thank you as well to Morgan Sabey for her ingenuity and dedication to project-based learning. The Grade 2 team and their creative approach brought forward the original idea in 2022.
Thank you, MES students, staff, and the Magrath community, for providing and supporting this fun night.
Sincerely,
Darren Mazutinec Superintendent Westwind School Division
