Teachers Reject Agreement; Strike Action Planned for October 6, 2025

September 30, 2025 - Westwind School Division is preparing for the possibility of school closures after the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) announced on September 29, 2025, that its members voted against a tentative agreement with the Alberta provincial Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA).
The ATA has indicated it intends to begin strike action on Monday, October 6, 2025, if a new deal is not reached. Should the strike proceed, all Westwind schools will be closed to students starting October 6 and will remain closed until further notice. Families are advised to begin making alternate childcare arrangements in the event of a strike.
For the rest of this week, there are no changes to school operations. Classes continue as usual, and all Westwind schools remain open.
Collective bargaining for teachers in Alberta is conducted centrally between the ATA and TEBA, which represents the Government of Alberta and all school boards. Local bargaining cannot begin until a central agreement is reached. Westwind, like all divisions in the province, is not directly involved in the negotiating process but must prepare for the outcomes.
Westwind School Division will provide updates if strike action begins. Families can expect notices through the Division website and School Messenger.
