Yes. All Westwind schools are open, and classes are continuing as usual for the remainder of the week.
Schools will be closed beginning Monday, October 6, 2025, when the ATA strike begins.
Yes. The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) issued a formal strike notice to the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) on September 12th. This means strike action will begin on October 6th if a new agreement is not reached before then.
TEBA held a lockout vote on August 29th. The Labour Relations Board confirmed the vote is valid. This does not mean a lockout will happen.
A strike is a legal work stoppage by employees to pressure their employer to agree to their terms and conditions of employment.
A lockout is a work stoppage initiated by the employer. It is the employer's equivalent of a strike and may involve the closing of schools.
Employees perform only the duties assigned to them, strictly adhering to policy and contract obligations. This eliminates extra responsibilities, such as overtime or extracurricular activities.
If a full strike is called, all school buildings and properties will be closed to students.
Access will be permitted to community joint-use programs.
In the event of a "work-to-rule" campaign, schools would remain open, but extracurricular activities and other non-essential services would be cancelled.
We are committed to providing you with as much notice as possible in the event a strike or lockout is called and schools are closed.
Westwind will notify families immediately via our division and school websites, as well as School Messenger.
Please ensure your contact information is up to date with the school.
In the event of a full strike, teacher-led instruction, whether in-person or online, would cease during a full strike. Teachers will not assign or assess student work.
The Alberta Government has implemented learning resources and financial compensation to assist parents/guardians of students during the strike period. Please see Alberta.ca for more information.
If schools are closed due to a full strike, school bus transportation will also be suspended.
All athletics, fine arts programs, extracurricular activities, and school-related events will be suspended from the start of the strike and remain suspended until the end of the strike period.
The provincial bargaining process is focused on a new collective agreement between the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) and the Teachers' Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA). Key areas of negotiation have included teacher compensation, classroom complexity, and class sizes.
