Administrative Procedure 252

REQUEST TO REVIEW CONTROVERSIAL RESOURCE MATERIALS

Background

The Division shall provide a process whereby concerned individuals or groups may register a complaint regarding any items included in the school library collection or used as a learning resource.

Procedures

  1. The concerned party must file the request to review with the Principal on a "Form for Request to Review Controversial Resource Materials" (Form 252) available at the school and on the Division website.
    1. Materials in question shall be evaluated with respect to:
      1. Administrative Procedure 251 – Library Materials Selection.
      2. Alberta Education Policy re: Controversial Issues in the Classroom (Guide to Education: ECS to Grade 12).
      3. Existing community culture and values.
        Care is to be taken to ensure that the materials in question are evaluated "in context''.
         
  2. The decision of the Principal will be made after consultation with the librarian and/or a teacher, and a member of the school council.
     
  3. The Principal's decision may be appealed to the Superintendent.
