STAFF PARTICIPATION IN POLITICS

Background

Employees have the right to campaign for and hold public office and the right to request leave for such activity. At the same time, the Division believes that employees, in deciding whether or not to seek election to public office, should consider carefully their duties and responsibilities as employees in the Division.

Procedures

  1. A leave of absence without pay shall be granted:
    1. For the purpose of seeking a nomination as a candidate for any political party or for local government or agencies to a maximum of three (3) days.
    2. For the number of consecutive days requested during the period between and inclusive of the date nominations close and the election date to employees who are candidates for Parliament, Provincial Legislature or local government.
       
  2. A leave of absence with partial pay (cost of substitute) shall be granted:
    1. To a maximum of five (5) days per school year to employees elected to public office in local government in order for them to attend meetings or other responsibilities which may occur during normal working hours.
       
  3. Employees considering seeking public office are advised to consult with the Principal to review time commitments and subsequent substitute needs of such action.
     
  4. All requests for leaves shall be addressed to the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources who shall have authority to deal with them within this Administrative Procedure.
     
  5. Requests are to be submitted at least ten (10) school days before the leave is to commence.
