SUBSTITUTE PERSONNEL IN SCHOOLS

Background

The Senior administration team has the responsibility for approving a pool of substitute personnel that will be available to fill day-to-day vacancies in the school.

Definition

Immediate family is defined as wife, husband, partner, mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter, grandchildren, nephew, niece and any in-laws of same.

Procedures

  1. Teachers desiring to work as a substitute in Division schools, are required to:
    1. Submit a completed personnel information package to Division Office,
    2. Be interviewed by a member of the Senior administration team.
       
  2. Individuals desiring to work as substitutes for support staff are required to:
    1. Submit a completed personnel information package to Division Office,
    2. Be interviewed by a member of the Senior administration team.
       
  3. Only approved applicants will be authorized for potential employment.
     
  4. The Division reserves the right to add or remove an individual from the approved substitute list at any time. The Senior administration team, in consultation with principals, will make these decisions on a school-by-school basis.
    1. Information regarding employee absence and the assignment of substitute personnel shall be monitored by the Senior administration team.
       
  5. Unless specifically approved, by a member of the Senior administration team on a case-by-case basis, no substitute (teachers or support staff) shall be an immediate family member of the person for whom the substitute is hired.
     
  6. When a substitute is hired for an employee who is paid by the hour, he/she shall be remunerated on a per hour basis.
     
  7. A substitute teacher shall be remunerated in half-day increments (as per the collective agreement).
